CUT TO INT. RECEPTION OF CARE HOME. DAY 2 Sidney and Leonard stand at the desk talking to REBECCA, an attractive nurse. SIDNEY We’re off then Becky, Becks, REBECCA Where to? LEONARD (holding mouth) Dentist. REBECCA Strictly speaking you should really have an escort from the home. SIDNEY I’m taking him. REBECCA You’re both going to the bookmakers aren’t you? SIDNEY You got us bang to rights there, but you wouldn’t deny two old gents a little fun would you? Pause. LEONARD I’ve got an inside tip, ‘Gorgeous Nurse’ in the three thirty. REBECCA Go on. (they start to exit) And boys? SIDNEY What? REBECCA (beckons them back) Put a fiver on for me. REBECCA gives Sidney a fiver. EXT. SCRAP YARD. DAY Open on Sidney, Leonard and DERMOT all standing looking at something. Dermot is in his forties and built like a fridge freezer. They stand in silence. SIDNEY Dead. DERMOT I’m sorry Sidney, I would have told you, but I didn’t know where to find you. SIDNEY I can’t believe it, Alfie Doyle, he seemed indestructible. LEONARD Aren’t you going to bury him? DERMOT No. He’s going to sit there, for the moment. LEONARD In the yard? Dermot It’s a family business. THEIR POV. We now see they are looking at a very large safe. Surrounded by flowers. On it is painted. “PAPS” “ LOVING MEMORY” Then in smaller letters, “do not open –health hazard” Sidney steps forward and strokes the safe. SIDNEY He’d have loved that Dermot. LEONARD It’s like a tomb. SIDNEY Buried like one of them Pharaoh’s. Very fitting. DERMOT We thought so. He was a bit of a lad when he was younger. You both were a couple rogues weren’t you? SIDNEY Yeah. (awkward pause) Did he per chance mention me in his will? DERMOT Why would he do that, Sidney? SIDNEY Was there a will? DERMOT If there was we didn’t find it. SIDNEY How hard did you look? DERMOT Is there a problem Sidney? SIDNEY The thing is Dermot, Forty years ago, your Dad and I decided to invest a little ill gotten gains, in some land, as a nest egg. DERMOT That was sensible Sidney. SIDNEY Indeed, the things is, before I could sign the papers I got arrested, so your Dad bought it just in his name. On the understanding we’d divvy up later. DERMOT I see. SIDNEY It was a gentleman’s agreement. DERMOT And where exactly is this land Sidney? SIDNEY We’re standing on it. Your Dad built up the scrap business here. Now, the business, is your business, not my business, nothing to do with me Dermot. I just own half the land. DERMOT Have you nothing on paper? SIDNEY We shook hands. The thing is Dermot, I always saw this investment as ‘rainy day’ money. And unfortunately life is now pissing on me..And I’d like to cash in. DERMOT You’ve no piece of paper? Just a spit of the hand and a shake. SIDNEY Those were the ways we did things Dermot. (surveying the scrap yard) Now the yard is probably worth eighty grand so I’d be happy with forty. DERMOT (astonished) God, you really think this land is worth eighty grand? You’re way off Sidney. SIDNEY Well give us thirty. DERMOT Sidney, you and Paps should have put something in writing. I mean now he’s dead and probates through - we just sold the yard. SIDNEY Sold it? DERMOT Yeah, for a million quid. Sidney staggers LEORNARD Steady Sidney. SIDNEY (can hardly breath) A million quid. DERMOT I think they’re building a new Tesco. LEONARD What about your old dad? DERMOT Oh we’ll find another scrap heap for him. SIDNEY What about my share? DERMOT Sorry Sidney, with nothing in writing, there’s nothing I can do. You must be gutted. I know I would be. Can I get you a cup of tea? Sidney looks like he is going to have a heart attack. END OF PART ONE.
